What happens to what you trade on those days

  • US indices (US30, NAS100, SPX500): there is no cash session. Your broker’s CFDs and CME futures usually trade a shortened session or close early: check your broker’s holiday schedule.
  • Gold and oil: follow the CME holiday schedule, usually with an early halt and thin liquidity.
  • Forex: open, but with less volume. Dollar spreads can widen, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With wider spreads, the same stop costs you more. Before trading on a holiday, recalculate your size with the lot size calculator or, for futures, with the futures contracts calculator.

How to plan a holiday week

A New York holiday does not stop every market. Forex stays open, but with less liquidity: spreads can be wider and moves more erratic. CME futures usually trade shorter hours and some halt earlier than normal; check CME’s holiday calendar for the contract you trade.

The sessions around the holiday matter too: volume usually drops the days before and after, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you trade with a prop firm, check whether it counts holidays as trading days and how it treats positions held through the closure.
