What is released at each meeting
- The statement with the decision on the federal funds target range, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
- The Fed Chair’s press conference, half an hour later.
- In March, June, September and December, also the Summary of Economic Projections: growth, unemployment, inflation and the dot plot with the rates each member expects.
- Three weeks after each meeting, the minutes, which also move the market.
How it affects your trading
At decision time the dollar, gold and US indices tend to move sharply. Spreads widen and stops can fill with slippage. If you trade those minutes, cut your position size so a wider stop does not go over your risk: the lot size calculator tells you how many lots fit. Some prop firms restrict trading around high-impact news: check your account’s rules.
Example: Nasdaq position size on Fed night
With a $50,000 account and 1% risk ($500), a 20-point stop on the NQ future risks $400 per contract (20 × $20): one fits. If you prefer a 40-point stop on Fed day, the risk per NQ rises to $800 and none fits; with the micro MNQ at $2 per point, six fit, risking $480.
The current federal funds range and every change, with its date, are on the Fed interest rates page, which updates itself after each meeting.
